Welcome to February, Bandits!
It's a new month, which means it's also time for the next volume of our Spotlight Series! This month's feature artist is a personal favorite of mine and most certainly one of the coolest people to walk the Earth. Who, you may ask? I'll give you a hint. She studied neuroscience, sailed down the Mississippi River, and her latest album Visions was one of the most well-received of 2013. Let me introduce you to Claire Boucher AKA Grimes.
SYNTHS & PIXELATED FAIRY DUST
As briefly mentioned in the introduction, Grimes attended McGill University in Montreal to pursue neuroscience where she eventually discovered her musical superpowers, ultimately dropping out to dominate the music scene full-time. This means that not only is she obscenely talented in the lyrical and musical departments, but that intellectually she is superior to 99% of the population. Her 2009 was also infinitely cooler than all of ours; Grimes and her boyfriend sailed down the Mississippi River from Minneapolis to New Orleans with nothing but a brood of chickens, a copy of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and some potatoes. However, their chickens died and their boat was impounded halfway through the voyage. (And you thought a trip to Yosemite was roughing it) Grimes's debut album, Geidi Primes was released in 2010 and has since been followed by Halfaxa (2010) and, most recently, Visions (2013), all of which received positive reviews. In short, Grimes wins at life and we're all living in her pixelated fairy dust world.
With her trademark chromatic hair, distinctive vocals, and hands-on involvement in her music production, few to none are like Grimes. Stylistically, her music is undoubtedly her own. Though difficult to characterized, ephemeral synths and uptempo beats that bleed into heavily produced drops make each track undeniably Grimes. Similar in style to Bjork, I would even go so far as to compare her vocals to Lykke Li, another favorite of mine.
